Equipment Sizing Guide > Ice Hockey Skates
Hockey skates are the most important piece of equipment for any hockey player. The way the skates fit will make all the difference in the way the player performs on the ice.
There are three basic parts of the skate:

1. Interior boot: the inside padded boot of the skate.
2. Exterior boot: the hard outside of the skate.
3. The skate blade.

Most ice skates will fit about ½ size smaller than the regular shoe size of the player. This is so the skate fits snugly, much like a glove.

Never buy skates that the player will “eventually grow into” as this means that for the time being the skate will fit incorrectly.
A good fit means the toes can wiggle freely at the toe of the skate while the heel of the foot fits comfortably into the back end.
At the same time, the skate needs to be wide enough so the front side of the toes and feet don’t rub against the inside of the boot of the skate.

When trying on ice skates, wear a cotton sock that is 100% breathable, the same sock that is going to be worn during play.
Slide the foot into the skate so that the toes just touch the front of the skate. You should be able to slip one finger between the heel and the inside of the skate.
For players who have wide feet, take the sole out of the skate boot and place the foot on top so that you can correctly see the fit.

While wearing the skates, the player should walk around for about 10 to 15 minutes to determine if they are comfortable.
The most important point of trying on skates is to ensure there is good ankle stability.
At the same time, the ankle support needs to allow for mobility while still fitting like a glove.

Attachable Blades:
The attachable blades need to be kept in prime condition at all times to ensure maximum performance.
Blades should never touch any other surface except the ice.
Always sharpen the blades before every practice and game.
Dull blades hinder performance and can cause the player to trip and fall. Proper blade sharpening can make the difference between a good hockey experience and a great one.

Use these quick tips when fitting ice hockey skates:

• Take along the same socks that you’re going to be playing in.

• Hockey skates need to fit more snugly than everyday shoes.

Start fitting skates by starting with a size that is one smaller than the player’s shoe size.

• Slide the foot into the boot of the skate being sure that the toes just touch the toe of the book.

• The heel of the foot should fit snugly yet comfortably into the back of the skate.

• To make sure the heel of the foot is sitting firmly at the back of the skate, tap the heel firmly on the floor.

• Skates need to be laced for a snug yet comfortable fit.

• Get into the “skating stance” to make sure the skate isn’t too small.

The skating stance is when the player stands crouched over just a bit, with the feet placed shoulder width apart. If the foot is moving around in the boot while in the skating stance, it’s a good indication the skate is too big.

• If the skate feels as though it’s too narrow try on the same sized skate with a wider boot.

Every player’s foot is different so it’s important to try on several different brands of skates to get the best in stability and comfort
